Lovely linen
I love linen because it has such a beautiful look and feel. These linen dishcloths are easy to make and will only get better with time. They will soften but will retain their beautiful look and feel.
Making something by hand is much more rewarding than just buying everything. These linen dishcloths make a great, meaningful gift.
If you take the time to make something by hand you can make it something you truly love. You can decide which fiber, color & size you make.
There’s just something special about making things yourself. I find that I’m more prone to just throwing things away that were cheap and easy to replace.
But, something I made myself, or something that someone gave to me is much harder to throw away and I believe that’s a good thing. It adds purpose & meaningfulness to our lives.
Why linen dishcloths?
Linen is made from the flax plant. The whole plant, from root to top can be used for making linen fibers.
Remember that rough, uneven-looking linen fabric? Well, that’s because the whole flax plant can be used. The smaller and the thicker parts.
Linen fabric is a sustainable choice because the whole of the plant can be used for making linen fabric and linen thread.
The long fibers of flax make linen fabric a very durable fabric. And it only gets better over time!
Linen softens the more you use it. That’s because the linen fibers break down over time without losing their strength. This relaxes the whole of the linen fabric or linen yarn and makes it nice and soft.
Materials for a handmade linen dishcloth
To make these beautiful linen dishcloths you’ll need:
- Size 4 crochet hook (mine is from Lana Grossa)
- 100% Linen yarn
If you can’t find 100% linen yarn, choose another natural fiber or a linen/ cotton blend— hemp, bamboo, etc.
I used a cotton/linen blend for the one in the photos.
Crochet hook
The beautiful crochet hook I used is from Lana Grossa. I love the look and feel of this crochet hook.
The yarn slides smoothly over the top and the handle is comfortable to use, even for larger projects.
I highly recommend investing in a durable set of crochet hooks. Even when you want to try crocheting I recommend start with one, good quality hook over a cheap set of hooks.
